The Book of Life
"I have never let my schooling interfere with my education." - Mark Twain
Past
Bahram was born in a very small metropolitan city called Tehran
(facts|photos). Tehran is the capital of Iran, one
of the biggest tiny countries in the world (facts|photos).
History
There are many rumors about his ancestors. Over sixty years
ago, in 1941 when World War II was hot, a British soldier killed an old man in
a remote village of Southern Iran (Persia). That old man was actually General Ali
Akbaroddoleh-ye Deilamee, one of the founders of the Notorious Persia
Resistance (NPR) that after some years Americans found out about this acronym
and used it for National Public Radio.
Anyways, one of his colleagues, Colonel Younes Longusian,
could survive the battle in that remote area and made it to the big city of Shiraz.
He married one of the nieces of Shah (the King) and started a small company in
the vicinity of Shiraz. It didn't take long for him to build two new factories
and some other stuff to become the second most famous man in that region.
One of colonel's second cousins, Esmaeel Shooskari, made it
to Harvard business school in 1967 and got A's in all of his courses and
graduated as a PhD and found a job at the University of Tehran in 1975. He got
three patents and several publications before he left the country because of
the revolution in 1979. His niece, Fariba Shamghali-gholi, who got her PhD in university
of Brown the previous year, came back to Iran to replace him as the professor
and soon she became the professor of the year for three consecutive years. She
died in an accident while she was in her black Mercedes Benz chased by a
stranger in downtown London. The stranger was her lawyer who just wanted to
tell her that her mom just died and she left her $1.7 billion in one of the
Swiss Banks branches in Kish Island. Her son, Ostoghoddous "Osi"
Hooshanparvar, got all the money and built a very huge house in Tehran's Karegar
Avenue...
So what is the relationship between Bahram and Osi? Bahram
used to live in the same street!
School
He was the top student in his class when he was going to the
elementary and middle school. It didn't take that long for him to understand
that there are some people who are doing better that he does at school when he
made it to one of the best public schools in Tehran, Alborz high school. Although he could never
be one of the top 10 students in the whole school, he could manage it to get
into the high-ranked Sharif University
of Technology as a civil engineering student.
Question: Is the best school everything?
After three years of being in the program, he realized that
he had studied more computer science related books than civil engineering! So
he started to think about changing his major to Computer Science but he had to
start almost all over again. So he decided to take a chance and apply to
American schools to see if he can get admission in any Computer Science related
subject.
When the second derivative becomes zero: In March 2001 he received a mail that changed his life
forever. Voilą! He got accepted in the IT PhD program at University of North
Carolina at Charlotte (site)
Present
Bahram is currently studying Biomedical Engineering/BioImaging at the University of Tennesse at Memphis. He finished his Master's in the field of Computer Science at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte
Question: A civil engineer? or a computer dude? or a biomedical engineer?
Good question but there is no correct answer to that. Of the above three, he prefers to consider himself a confused computer dude! It's fun for him to learn everything he really likes to learn and he seems to be more enthusiastic about learning computer and information technology stuff. Although he doesn't consider himself a well-trained civil engineer, he believes that he has a good engineering understanding that makes him want to solve everybody's problems ... so he talks alot!
Question: A computer geek?
His favorite quote is "Life would be much easier if we
had the source code"! He spends several hours per day at his computers at
home and school coding and coding. He has high-speed internet connection at
home although he doesn't have money to payback his credit card debts. He loves
to listen to internet radios and mp3's. 90 percent of his friends are all
computer geeks. Is he a computer geek?
No for three reasons:
First: He knows how to spell G-I-R-L
Second: He actually proposed to his girlfrined on a pacific beach, where there were no computers
Third: He was drinking with frineds when the clock showed 12:00 midnight on Jan 01, 2000, instead of worrying about Y2K bug that was going to destroy the world
Other Activities
Because his life has always been multi-dimensional, he is always looking for something new in his
life. He loves learning about new technologies as much as he loves to go around
and find out more about the place he is living in. He has already been to many
States of the US in an effort to know the American culture better. He plays
ping pong, soccer, volleyball pool, and piano every now and then. He can't wait to go skiing with his cousin in California. He also likes to hang out
with friends some times and drink some beer. His cat keeps his feminie side active while playing poker with his poker buddies makes sure the masculine side doesn't get overlooked! More activities? He used to
update a Farsi weblog on the web that he had
to close because of the thesis pressure. He also spends time with his closest
friends Shervin and Farhad. He has recently started another weblog and a podcast with Farhad. Take a look: www.didigoftam.com
Future
If you know what happens in the future, good for you! I don't, so I believe in the following phrase:
Carpe Diem! (translation)
Do I want to get rich? Yes. Do I want to be happy? Do I want
to become a CEO? Yes and no. Do I want to stay in the US? Yes. Do I want to buy a house? Yes. Do I want to buy a BMW? Yes although Lexus is a close second.
Do I want to add positive energy to this world? Yes. Do I want to go to Heaven? Absolutely not if certain people I know are supposed to go to the same heaven.
I try to stay here as much as possible and enjoy my limited time on the earth. I am enjoying present for the time being. In the future, I still enjoy the present at that time. I will think about heaven and hell when I die!
